Ring of Brodgar

Early humans were fascinated by stones, espcecially large ones, and throughtout the world they dug them out, moved them over long distances, and set them up in configuartions whose meaning has now been lost. From Brittany, north as far as man can go, they placed them in concentric circles. The best known are of course those at Stonehenge, but nowadays they are ringed with fences and tourist busses. Amesbury not far away is more accessible and just as interesting. On Orkney, alone by itself in the midst of a plane stands the Ring of Bodgar. Many of the stones in the central circle are still erect, as may be seen from the photograph. It is a eerie place even in the light of a bright day
